ACC WRAPS UP TRAINING FOR PROSECUTORS ON CRIMINAL PROCEDURE REFORMS AND STRATEGIC LITIGATION

NEWS ITEM

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) successfully concluded a two-day intensive training for its prosecutors last week, focusing on enhancing prosecutorial capacity through strategic litigation of anti-corruption cases. The training was held at Fabulous Resort from Thursday, 2nd October to Friday, 3rd October 2025.

The opening day featured Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala Esq., who delivered the welcome address and led a session on the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008 and its amendment, highlighting best practices in prosecutions and witness management. Commissioner Kaifala  noted that humans often have instinctive tendencies toward corruption, whether to advance personal interest or meet urgent survival needs, underscoring the critical work of the Commission.

Rt Chief Justice, Nicholas Browne-Marke (JSC) provided an in-depth session on the reforms introduced by the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, including new procedures for committal, trial, and sentencing that promote fairness, safeguard defendants’ rights, and improve efficiency in criminal litigation.

Participants also took part in a panel discussion on emerging legal challenges in anti-corruption prosecutions, moderated by Justice Browne-Marke, and the day concluded with closing remarks by Deputy Director Sariffou Harleston Esq.

The second day focused on appellate processes in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, with practical exercises on preparing appeals in hypothetical anti-corruption cases. Facilitators included Justice Alusine Sesay (JSC) and Rt. Director of Public Prosecutions, Oladipo V. Robin-Mason Esq.

The training strengthened the ACC’s prosecutorial team, equipping them with advanced skills to effectively enforce anti-corruption laws across Sierra Leone.
