 ACC POPULARIZES MONITORING REPORTS IN THE WESTERN AREA RURAL DISTRICT

With Support from the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has engaged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the Western Area Rural District to popularize three monitoring reports produced by the Prevention Department of the ACC. 

The engagement which was held at the Western Area Rural District Council (WARDC), in Waterloo, on Friday 17th May, 2024 was attended by representatives from the different MDAs within the District.

Communications Officer-ACC, Dolly Aminata Issa, who chaired the program spoke on the purpose of the meeting which was to popularize the contents of the three monitoring reports on National Telecommunications Authority (NaTCA), Ministry of Water Resources and the Sierra Leone National Fire Force (SLNFF).  She emphasized that if MDAs  are able to curb corruption, Sierra Leone will be a better place with accountability and transparency. "That is why the saying, Prevention is better than cure is paramount in the fight against corruption".

Alhaji A.K Bangura, Senior Communications Officer ACC, explained in detail the roles and responsibilities of the Prevention Department in the Commission. He cited  Sections 7 and 8 of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008 (as amended in 2019 ), which states that the “Prevention Department functions as an arm to prevent corruption in institutions by assessing systemic gaps and proffering recommendations and ensuring institutions comply with its implementations”.

The Head of Outreach Unit, Al-Hassan Sesay highlighted the contents of the three monitoring reports and emphasized on the good work of the ACC. He further urged MDAs to always comply with recommendations contained in the systems review reports of their institutions to ensure and enhance effective service delivery.

Welcoming participants to the engagement, the Deputy Chief Administrator, WARDC, Alhassan Yillah outlined some of the gains made by the ACC in the fight against corruption and thanked the team for the senisitization on the monitoring reports.

The engagement was interactive as representatives of the MDAs were given the opportunity to ask questions, make suggestions and comments which were answered and responded to by Al-Hassan Sesay, Head-Outreach.
