Anti-Corruption Commission Sierra Leone and Transparency International Sierra Leone Chapter Commemorate African Anti-Corruption Day on the theme: “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption”

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT

The Anti-Corruption Commission Sierra Leone (ACC-SL) and Transparency International Sierra Leone (TI-SL) Chapter wish to inform the public that they are joining other African Union (AU) Member States to commemorate the African Anti-Corruption Day on 11th July 2025 under the theme: “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption.”

The AU adopted July 11 as the African Anti-Corruption Day in recognition of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC), which was adopted on 11th July 2003 in Maputo, Mozambique, and came into force in 2006. Since then, 48 Member States, including Sierra Leone, have ratified the Convention and taken steps to criminalize corruption, establish anti-corruption institutions, and implement robust prevention mechanisms.

This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the AUCPCC and the 9th edition of African Anti-Corruption Day. The day serves as a platform to reflect on national and continental efforts in fighting corruption and to reaffirm our collective commitment to the Convention’s principles.

According to the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption, “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption…is an opportune moment to reaffirm that anti-corruption is not simply a legal or institutional process, it is a human-centered imperative that demands empathy, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all.”

In line with this, the ACC-SL reassure citizens of its commitment to continue to robustly instill integrity in public life as well as tailor its work and operations in line with local laws and international conventions that protect human dignity. TI-SL pledges its support to the ACC-SL and the country’s efforts to fight against corruption, and therefore calls on all citizens, public institutions, private sector players, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations, to join the anti-corruption campaign in order to build on the gains the country has made over the years.

Citizens, especially Whistleblowers, Informants and Complainants, who report incidences of corruption to the ACC-SL, are further assured of protection at all times. It is only through collective action that we can ensure a future where every Sierra Leonean can live with dignity, fairness, and an environment free from the debilitating effects of corruption.
